What Kinda Cactus Izzat? A "who who" of strange plants in the southwestern American desert Reg Manning 9780830023233 Books
This book was published decades ago yet is still a great reference for visitors to the southwest who want to learn about cactus, but don't want to strain their brains. Reg Manning was a popular cartoonist and long-time desert dweller. He distills a lot of information about the desert and its unique flora into a small book. The use of whimsical cartoons entertains and instructs. I first read this book as a child and still remember names of cactus based on Manning's light hearted approach. I keep a copy on hand for my Tucson visitors. This book is particularily popular with Germans! If you live in Arizona, or vacation in the Southwest desert, this book belongs in your library.Tags : What Kinda Cactus Izzat?: A who's who of strange plants in the southwestern American desert [Reg Manning] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Funny
Classic 40s-style cartooning by Reg Manning.
I have loved this book ever since I read it at my grandparents house growing up. Fun illustrations and actual information about southwestern flora.
nice
Reg Manning wrote and illustrated a classic little book all about cacti, agave, sotols, and other desert plants of southern Arizona in the 1950's. It's very clever and fun and extremely informative. My house guests pick it up and can't put it down -- it really sticks with you -- like the stickers on a jumping cholla. A wonderful little, unpretentious volume that's a classic.
The writing and the illustrations are both helpful and funny. However, the one thing this book absolutely needs is a "tree" diagram, either in the front matter or the back matter, that shows how all the cacti are classified. He covers it in the book but who is going to remember it unless they draw their own diagram. So it should have been in there after, what, 40 some different printings! On a different matter, I don't think actual photographs would help. There are many other books about cacti which have them and are available for purchase. This book has a certain character and charm in its cartoonish drawings which would be negatively impacted by the presence of photographs.
This light and playful book was very informative for a "read on the go". I was looking for a book to prepare me for a trip out west concerning the local flora and fauna. Not only was it an informative read with illustrations to match, it had a pleasant comical perspective (as the cover would suggest) that made it a joy to read. Reg Manning has been reissuing this book for many years now with whimsical cartoon images that are sure to delight anyone interested in the subject matter. One will be able to identify the most common plants in a desert environment using this book. Highly recommended.
